Letter regarding testing that will begin on May 3, 2021
Dear Parent/Guardian,
In February, a letter was sent from our district office indicating that your child would be taking an end of year, summative state assessment in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress System. This month, districts across California were informed by the California Department of Education that, due to the current pandemic, districts may determine whether or not these assessments are viable during this time, and if they are not, districts can move forward with administering a local district assessment. At this time, our district has determined that the state assessments are not a viable option for our students in grades 3-8, therefore we will be administering a local standards based assessment in its place to these students.
Please note that the assessments will be given using the Illuminate platform. This is a platform which your child is already familiar with since we have administered two other assessments using the same platform throughout this school year. The assessment(s) will cover grade-level learning targets to help teachers identify gaps in knowledge and plan out the support students will need to be successful next year. While no single test can give a complete picture of achievement, when combined with student grades and teacher reports, it can provide important information about student progress. These assessments are not intended to provide a grade but rather help teachers understand your child’s strengths and identify the areas that may need additional support.
Teachers will be giving these assessments during synchronous/live instruction time. It is extremely important that the assessment(s) be completed by your child without your assistance for question answers. We hope that you understand that any assistance from you on test questions may affect your child’s performance on the assessment and will prevent us from obtaining true data that shows us where your child might need support. We hope that you can assist us by gently encouraging your child to do their best, and by reminding your child that this assessment is meant to help teachers know where they can best support them.
If you have questions, please contact RIVERA MIDDLE SCHOOL at 562 801-7580, [email protected].
Sincerely,
Yvette Ventura, Rincon, Ed.D
