With the baseball season starting up today, it always marks a few things. It tells us spring is here, it tells us everything is new and it also tells us to get ready to cheer for our favorite team.  So, in order to celebrate a bit, we have three version of the very famous poem "Casey at the Bat" written by Ernest Thayer published on June 3, 1888, almost 133 years ago. 
Here is what you need to do:
First, read the poem on your own with the provided website link.
Second, listen to a reading of the poem with the YouTube link.
Third, watch a Disney cartoon that is about Casey.
For the home run, simply open up a document after you've done the above three things and tell me which version of the poem is best and why you feel that way. Detail what the poem made you feel and if you could use the story of the poem in other things in life. It should be about 2 paragraphs long.

Another reason the colonies start looking toward independence from England, aside form the all the taxes and being taken from granted, was the ideas of Enlightenment Thinkers, people that were beginning to rethink the role that governments had and how they ruled the people they felt they were supposed to be serving. So, slavery is over, per Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation. This means newly freed slaves lived happily every after, right? Unfortunately, with racism comes hate and the communities of the south incorporate new laws designed to hold African Americans down, not only in the immediate aftermath of the end of the Civil War and slavery, but for generations of people to come. Thos laws were called Jim Crow Laws, and this PDF will explain exactly what those laws did to people.

Though the struggles of African American people have not subsided, they were helped along by others, as well as by the actions of the federal government.
Eventually, slavery would be abolished in the United States by the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, and his famous speech, the Emancipation Proclamation.

Wednesday's assignment continued here with Part II

Last week, we covered the Slave Trade, how Africans were captured in their homeland and forced into slavery in America.
This week, you are covering how people were actually treated and how they lived as slaves.

In order to begin to honor and celebrate Black History Month, we must start from the beginning. Blacks in America were brought here not on their own accord, but by force. It is through perseverance that they have pushed through and survived as a people. The attached file gives an understanding of what was known as the Transatlantic Trade. When you study this later on in the 8th grade, you will hear it referenced as the Triangular Trade. This is only the first part of the lesson. The rest we will go over throughout the week and month.

Yesterday, January 27, was International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It is a day set aside so that people around the world could honor those that were killed during World War II in concentration camps.
- Please read the following History article and view all the pictures in the slide show.
- Once you have done that, please answer this one question: During World War II, Jews, gypsies and other people deemed "not worthy of living" were rounded up by German Nazi's at the direction of Adolf Hitler, and taken to work and death camps and as many as 6 million people were "exterminated". Do you think something like this could happen in our world again? Why or why not?

Tomorrow is Inauguration Day, the day the country gets a new president.

The last year was rough, on everyone, and I'm sure everyone is glad to see the calendar flip.
Usually, when we create resolutions, things are "normal" in the world, where we can go out and hang out with people, without masks and we are actually on campus, but we begin this year in the same situation we left off the last year, but hopefully closer to a solution.
With that said, I want you to come up with a list of 10 resolutions, 10 things that if implemented, will make you a better person. But, I want you to create the list as if everything is normal, as if we are on campus, as if we are around people.
For each resolution, give an example of what that would entail. When you are done, please turn it in via the classroom in a document.

Next Monday is Martin Luther King Jr Day, a day that is a federal holiday, where no school takes place. It is meant to celebrate his achievements, his life and unfortunately, his death.

We have been learning about Puritan thought and life. The Salem Witch Trials was a dark period of time for the Puritans where hysteria and paranoia hit the people of Salem especially hard. Watch the short video about the Salem Witch Trials and then answer the following questions in a well thought out short essay (at least 2 paragraphs):

#1 - At the beginning of the video, the narrator says, "You've been accused of a crime you did not commit. It is impossible to prove your innocence. You'll likely be found guilty and executed...but if you confess, apologize and implicate others for good measure, you'll go free..." Put yourself in the position of being in Salem during the Witch Trials, having been accused of witchcraft. Would you have confessed to something you did not commit in order to end the craziness of it all, also blaming others or do you stand your ground, possibly losing your life, but knowing you did not do anything wrong?
