Spotlight: Building Connection and Support at Rivera Middle School
In a quiet space on campus, students sit together.
They listen, talk, and work through challenges.
At Rivera Middle School, these moments are part of a larger effort to support the whole child and build a strong culture of care.
Restorative Practices
Staff use restorative practices to help students solve problems and repair relationships. Assistant Principal Mason helps lead this work across the school. These practices are part of daily school life and help students learn how to handle challenges in a positive way.
“Trained students help their peers talk through conflicts. They guide each other through conversations and work toward solutions together.”
Through Peer Mediation, students build communication and problem-solving skills by supporting one another through real challenges.
The Wellness Center
Restorative Justice Counselor Ms. Gul works closely with students each day. She leads conversations, mediation, and restorative circles. She is based in the school’s Wellness Center, where students can go for support when they need it.
These efforts are supported by the school’s PBIS system, which helps set clear expectations and build a positive school culture. Together, these supports help create an environment where students feel safe, supported, and connected.
Academic Growth
At Rivera, feeling connected also supports learning. Staff regularly check student progress and provide extra help when needed. In small groups, students work on key skills and build confidence in their learning.
Hands-On Learning
Students also explore their interests through hands-on learning. They take part in career exploration courses in areas such as engineering, culinary arts, veterinary science, and design. These experiences help students connect what they learn in class to real-world opportunities.
Together, these efforts show Rivera Middle School’s commitment to supporting students in all areas of their growth.
Students are given the tools to feel connected, confident, and ready to succeed.
In doing so, the school reflects El Rancho Unified’s vision of inspiring learners to thrive in an ever-changing world.
