There Have Been Too Many Absences

Parents,

There has been large increase in absences among students. Furthermore, an increase in students being taken out in the middle of their day, during instruction, has also occurred.

1.    As a result of absences, the following has been occurring: Students struggle to keep up with instruction, and therefore fail classes. When children miss their teachers’ instruction, they miss the material which enables them to pass exams.

2.
When you pull kids out of class, disruptions occur which throws off the teachers’ momentum with daily lessons. The teacher only has 55 minutes to relate the necessary information to students. Interruptions also interfere with the other students’ learning opportunity.

3.
When students are absent they get behind and cannot keep up. The end of the first trimester is November 14. Many parents are calling and emailing to ask if there is any “extra credit” their children can do to enable them to pass classes. No “extra credit” is offered in the case of absences. Students must complete/make-up the required grade-level material before extra credit can be applied.

4.    8th Grade Parents: Students are not meeting the criteria to promote in June. In order to allow your child to succeed and to promote with the other 8th-graders on June 5, please take into consideration their academic success when scheduling their dentist, doctor, and other appointments. If they can be made after school hours, your child will have an easier path to success.

Our school district has been increasing the criteria for students high school students to graduate, as well as to participate in sports. A 2.0 is required to graduate and to engage in athletics next year at the high school.

NOTE: More than 18 absences over the duration of a school year prevents your child from promotion.

Thank you for your support.
