Description

The Language Arts Program is based on the California State Common Core Standards in both depth and breadth.  Structure and elements of language include:  plot-hill summary, poetry, literary devices, the study of genre, literary analysis with historical context, vocabulary development with etymology, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and writing (essays) for multiple purposes. Students are assigned at least 4 novels throughout the year with an emphasis on theme and tone.  Expository documents and texts will be integrated with Social Studies and Science curriculum.  An essay will be assigned for each novel.  Accelerated Reading points are assigned for each novel as well.  Grades are based on tests and quizzes-both in comprehension and language structure, reading, essays, and participation.

Language Arts "The Ant and the Grasshopper"  finish analyzing the fable to share your thoughts.

In a field one summer's day a grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content.  A group of ants walked by, grunting as they struggled to carry plump kernels of corn.

"Where are you going with those heavy things?" asked the grasshopper.

Without stopping, the first ant replied, "To our ant hill.  This is the third kernel I've delivered today."

"Why not come and sing with me," teased the grasshopper, "instead of working so hard?"

"We are helping to store food for the winter," said the ant, "and think you should do the same."

"Winter is far away and it is a glorious day to play," sang the grasshopper.

But the ants went on their way and continued their hard work.

The weather soon turned cold.  All the food lying in the field was covered with a thick white blanket of snow that even the grasshopper could not dig through.  Soon the grasshopper found itself dying of hunger.

He staggered to the ants' hill and saw them handing out corn from the stores they had collected in the summer.  He begged them for something to eat.

"What!" cried the ants in surprise, "haven't you stored anything away for the winter?  What in the world were you doing all last summer?"

"I didn't have time to store any food," complained the grasshopper; "I was so busy playing music that before I knew it the summer was gone."

The ants shook their heads in disgust, turned their backs on the grasshopper and went on with their work.

Assignment

Language Arts:
Dear Room 7 Families:

April is National Poetry Month!  We are excited that our poetry project is under way, a favorite project among the students from past years.  This week, each student received one of the 22 English or American poets we will be studying for our Survey of Poetry Project, along with a poetry project guide.   This week, during Spring Break, I want the students to meet their new friends (the poets) by reading the poetry books they have received.  The poetry books contain the life of the poets, many of the most famous poems, and a synopsis of the poem and vocabulary each contains.  The students will read the books, go on the internet for more research, and make note cards containing the facts listed on their project guides.  I want them to get to know their poets intimately, so they will also have to research the societies in which they lived at the time they were alive.  Any pictures or references must be cites on the index cards and labeled under one of the categories.  I will not accept biography reports or pictures unless they are cited.

Since poetry is a universal emotion, the goal is for the students to identify with the historical era, the social and political environment, and the personal aspects of the poets.  They do not need to write the biography, however, this is a great time for them to invest in preparation.  They may choose a poem and look up the vocabulary, meaning, and literary devices that contribute to the tone of the poem, but I would like to read the poem with them BEFORE they memorize it.  The poem must contain at least 28 lines.  If the lines are only 4 words long, then the poem has to be over 36 lines.  The students have the opportunity to combine, art, social studies, literature, and public speaking within this project.  As they learn about their authors, they should be envisioning how the author would portray himself or herself, on the poster, to the audience.  Encourage your children to let their imaginations run wild on the poster. Please check to see everything that must be on the poster is present and well planned before you allow your children to complete the poster.  I am attaching various resources below just in case you have questions or misplace project papers.

For those of you whose children are getting good grades, and are achieving their goals, a meeting may not be necessary either.  I'm mostly concerned with conferencing with parents whose children are not meeting academic and/or citizenship goals for sixth grade.

Next year your children will be expected to perform at the California Common Core Standards level for 7th grade, which are based on meeting the levels set for the previous grades 1-6.  Any deficiencies in these levels will affect your child's performance in the coming year.   There are still nine weeks let, so the help your children receive from you and me can be the deciding factor for success.

Times begin every 15 minutes beginning on Wednesday, March 26 from 1:30 4:15PM
Thursday, March 27 from 1:00 - 4:15 PM.  Please email me and I will let you know if the time you have chosen is available.

Dear Parents:  November is already here and we are quickly approaching our field trip.  This year we will be attending The Christmas Carol play on Monday December 2, 2013.  The PTO is sponsoring the bus, each student will have to pay $12 for the ticket.  As you know, this coincides with the language arts novella we are reading. The play has been such a wonderful experience for our students each year.  The money can be turned in no later than November 20th.  This is a chance for students to experience London in the 1840s like they never have before.

Dear Parents:
Thank you all for the overwhelmingly positive responses at our first quarter conference.  Your children and I are fortunate to have such positive partners who will enable these very bright and serious students to achieve this year's Common Core learning objectives.  Just a recap: We are giving our students time to develop and practice their new skills in a student-centered learning environment.  We are focusing on the Cycle of Student Learning and Thinking; allowing students to be responsible for acquiring content mastery so they can take their learning to the next level.  Students will focus on key ideas developing a deeper understanding of the concepts.  The students will begin to use these newly acquired skills to deepen their understanding and reduce their time on task.  Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Leslie Novalis
