A kolam (pronounced kohl·uhm) is an Indian art form of geometric patterns, used as a sign of welcome. Drawn outside homes, the beautiful designs made of dots and lines provide a sense of joy and calm to all who enter. Traditionally hand-drawn with rice flour, kolams are inclusive and eco-friendly. Redrawn daily, kolams share the ephemeral and meditative qualities of Native American sand paintings and Buddhist mandalas.

The dots on a kolam depict hardships in life, and the lines drawn around the dots represent the way we navigate around our struggles and turn our lives into a beautiful mosaic work of art. Your kolam submissions are beams of good energy to solve problems and to help foster the beautiful patterns of diversity and inclusivity in America.

Vanakkam ("welcome") Kolam - a digital kolam made of individual kolam selfies (people could draw, color, or simply print a kolam and click a photo alongside). The digital kolam is interactive and enables you to see the individual submissions.

Participate in 4 Easy Steps!
Official Inauguration video completed. Share your kolam anyway :)
Send a copy to the email address in the link, AND send it me at the same time that you send it to them:

Send your photo with the subject line “PHOTO” to:
2021kolam@gmail.com
AND to:
Lcordes@erusd.org

.
Use Chapter 2: Forces in your Science Textbook to help you.

Read each section of the chapter for the section of the lab that you are working on. In other words, read about Newton's 1st Law, and then complete section 1 of the lab. Read law 2, then complete that section. etc

1) Use recyclables to build a car.

2) Your car should be able to travel 1.5m (approximately the length of your science textbook 3 and 1/2 times.)

3) Your car must be tested and videotaped for:
* Inertia (Law 1)
* Acceleration (Law 2)
* Action/Reaction (Law 3)

4) Your car must move backward in order to move forward (Newton's 3rd Law).

5) You cannot interfere with the movement of your vehicle-you cannot push it forward as you launch it and you cannot help it in anyway as it travels from the starting line to finish line.

6) Your car may not move by:
* No pushing or a pulling
* No ramps (except to test Newton's 1st & 2nd Laws)
* No slingshots
* No explosives (vinegar and baking soda are also considered explosives, so are Menthos and coke.)

7) Your car must be able to have it's front wheels start behind the starting line (1.5m away from wall) and carry a raw egg on it's nose.

8) Your car must stop when it "touches" the wall without breaking the egg.

9) Follow the instructions in the attached Kami document to test your vehicle.

10) Be sure to follow the Rubric in the attached Kami on the last page.

11) As frustrating as this may get, remember:
* Follow all the directions
* Try to get all 3's on the rubric
* Complete all trials for all 3 Laws as stated in the Kami document

12) MOST IMPORTANTLY record everything on paper AND with a camera to prove to me that you did it and that every step was followed.

13) HAVE FUN!!!

14) Present your car and results to me in a FlipGrid. Include all attachments for this project.

Grade will be based on:
Rubric Criteria = 3 x 8 = 24 pts possible
FlipGrid Presentation = 20 pts possible
Video recordings of Newton's 1st Law = 5 pts possible
Video recordings of Newton's 2nd Law = 6 pts possible
Video recordings of Newton's 3rd Law = 20 pts possible
Participation = 25 pts possible

TOTAL = 100 pts possible
